COOLER INSTALLATION – GENERAL

COOLER ORIENTATION

Coolers should be oriented for optimum cooling performance. All coolers, whether oil-to-water or oil-to-air type, should be oriented so that they fill properly with transmission fluid and do not trap air. Trapped air may reduce fluid flow and subsequently result in reduced cooling capabilities. This page describes points to consider when determining proper cooler orientation. However, to determine the best method to achieve optimum cooling for your application, consult with your cooler manufacturer and follow the manufacturer's guidelines. Different types of coolers have different considerations as discussed below.

  • OIL-TO-AIR COOLERS

For maximum performance, oil-to-air coolers should be oriented such that air is easily purged and the core is always full of oil (Figure illustrates below). Recommended orientations for oil-to-air coolers. When the cooler is mounted so that the ports are located on the side of the cooler, oil should be directed in at the bottom and out at the top (as shown in the left view of Figure below). This assures that air is purged from the cooler. In cases where an oil-to-air cooler is mounted so that the ports are not located on the side, the ports should be mounted at the top of the cooler (as shown in the right view of Figure below). This assures that air is purged from the cooler.

An oil-to-air cooler should not be installed with the ports at the bottom of the cooler. Ports located at the bottom of the cooler can create venting and filling problems. With bottom ported coolers in low oil flow conditions, the core may not become full and the hot oil is allowed to pass through only a portion of the core.

CAUTION: Cooler line size must result in a total cooler circuit pressure drop less than the maximum allowable pressure drop, and allow sufficient oil flow to meet cooling requirements.
